BUYER EVALUATION

Buying a packing machine is a big decision, especially for small and mid-sized businesses where every rupee counts. If you get it right, your production line runs smoothly for years. If you get it wrong, you're stuck with a machine that doesn't fit your product, a supplier who stops answering calls, and downtime you can't afford.

The problem is, most manufacturers will tell you what you want to hear during the sales conversation. So the only way to separate the good ones from the rest is to know the right questions to ask packing machine manufacturer before you sign anything or pay a single advance.

Here are 10 questions to ask any packing machine manufacturer before you buy.

Q.01

How many years have you been in this business?

When it comes to industrial machinery, experience always matters. A manufacturer who has been around for 5, 10, 15, or 20 years has already solved problems you haven't even thought of yet. Their designs are field-tested. Their machines have run in real factories and not just demo floors. Ask for specific numbers, not vague answers like 'we've been doing this for a long time.' A confident manufacturer will tell you exactly how many years they've been in operation and how many machines they've installed.
SAM Robotics Standard

SAM Robotics was founded in 2020 on 15 years of the founder's field engineering experience, and we'll give you exact figures on machines delivered and years in operation in writing.

Q.02

Do you manufacture the machines yourself or source them from somewhere else?

This one is important. Some suppliers don't actually build anything. They import machines from China or other countries, put their label on them, and sell them to you. That's not always a deal-breaker, but it can become one when you need spare parts, custom modifications, or quick support. A manufacturer that builds in-house has better control over quality, faster turnaround times for spare parts, and greater flexibility to customise a machine for your specific product. Ask to see their production facility; even a video tour tells you a lot.
SAM Robotics Standard

SAM builds every machine in-house at the Coimbatore facility — TIG/MIG welding, CNC, VMC, laser cutting and assembly all under one roof, so spare parts and custom modifications come straight from the people who built your machine.

Q.03

Have you worked with products like mine before?

Packing machines are not one-size-fits-all. An auger packing machine manufacturer in India will tell you that fine powders like turmeric or flour require a completely different setup from a multi-head weigher packing machine supplier handling snack pellets or granules. A VFFS collar packing machine for dry products is very different from a bottle filling machine built in India for liquids. Even small differences in flow, density, or moisture content can affect daily performance. Tell the manufacturer exactly what you're packing — the product type, weight range, bag format, and any special requirements. Then ask if they've handled similar products before. Ask them to walk you through what machine they'd recommend and why.
SAM Robotics Standard

From namkeen mixtures and pulses to masala, turmeric and coffee powder, SAM matches the filling system to your product: a multi-head weigher for granules, an auger for powders. We also recommend the right machine based on actual flow and density of your product.

Q.04

What is the actual total cost and not just the machine price?

The price tag on a packing machine is never the full story. On top of the machine cost, you'll likely have installation charges, operator training, periodic maintenance, spare parts, and sometimes a separate charge for AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract). Ask for a full cost breakdown before you compare quotes across suppliers. A machine that looks cheaper upfront might end up costing more over three years once you add up everything else. Look at total cost of ownership, not just the purchase price.
Q.05

What does your after-sales support actually look like?

This is one of the most important questions to ask packing machine manufacturer and one that buyers often forget to ask in detail. Any machine will need servicing, part replacement, or troubleshooting at some point. When that happens, how quickly can the manufacturer respond? Ask specifically: Do they offer remote support? Can they send a technician on-site? What is their average response time for service requests? Do they have a support team, or is it just one person you have to chase on WhatsApp?
SAM Robotics Standard

Sam Robotics provides remote video support and dispatches engineers on-site for major issues, with fast response times across India and export markets.

Q.06

Can I see the machine running before I make a decision?

A brochure or a YouTube video can only show you so much. Before you finalise anything, ask if you can visit their facility and see the machine running — ideally with a product similar to yours. Pay attention to the build quality, how smooth the operation is, noise levels, and how easy it is for the operator to make adjustments. If an in-person visit is not possible, ask for a live video demo. A manufacturer confident in their product will have no problem doing this.
Q.07

What training do you provide for our operators?

Even the best machine is only as good as the person running it. Ask whether the manufacturer provides hands-on operator training as part of the purchase, or if it comes at an extra cost. More importantly, ask what the training covers — basic operation is the minimum, but you also want your team to know how to handle common errors and do routine maintenance themselves. Good training saves you a lot of trouble down the line and reduces your dependency on the manufacturer for every small issue.
SAM Robotics Standard

Operator training is part of every SAM installation, covering daily operation, common error handling, and routine maintenance, so your team isn't dependent on us for every small issue.

Q.08

Can this machine scale with my business?

If you're looking for a packing machine for startups in India or you're an MSME just getting your production line off the ground, this question is especially relevant. You might be packing 500 kg per shift today — but what does your operation look like two or three years from now? Ask whether the machine can be upgraded in speed, capacity, or functionality. Can a basic automatic packing machine be integrated into a larger automated line later? Can an auger filler handle multiple SKUs down the line? A good MSME packing machine manufacturer will be upfront about what can be upgraded later, so you're not stuck buying a whole new machine every time your volumes go up.
SAM Robotics Standard

Sam Robotics offers dedicated machines for startups and MSMEs, designed with scalability in mind as your production grows.

Q.09

What certifications does the machine carry?

Depending on your industry, compliance with safety and quality standards may be non-negotiable. Food, pharma, and chemical companies in particular need to check this carefully. Ask whether the machine meets relevant certifications — CE marking, ISO standards, food-grade material compliance, or any other standard that applies to your sector. Don't assume. Confirm it in writing before you place an order.
SAM Robotics Standard

SAM machines are ISO certified and CE marked, GST registered for domestic supply, with additional certifications arranged for export destinations on request.

Q.10

Can you share references from existing customers?

A proper packaging machine supplier evaluation always includes speaking to people who already own the machine. A manufacturer who stands behind their product will readily give you contact details of existing customers — ideally ones in the same industry or with similar production setups. Speak to them directly. Ask how the machine has held up over time, how the manufacturer handled problems, and whether they'd buy from them again. If a supplier hesitates to share references, that itself tells you something worth paying attention to.
SAM Robotics Standard

SAM works with FMCG, food, and snack manufacturers across India and 25+ export countries, and can connect serious buyers with relevant references on request.
